The "interview" process

After leaving my 2nd interview today with a company that has a dominant presence in the U.S,. (name withheld)....I wonder why we bother to give in our resume? I had to spend another 40 minutes in the lobby of a possible future employer, with no desk or ledge to write on, and fill out page upon page of personal data - including all my employment specifics, my social security #, my Driver's License #, MY BIRTH DATE (and believe me when I say I normally try to avoid this question and employers can figure it out by how many years you have worked) all my school degrees, what schools, etc, references including names, phone #'s, e-mail addresses and I do not want to go on. You get the picture. By the time I actually was invited into a private space for my interview the interviewer whizzed on through so fast that I had to interrupt her to ask whether I was taking up her time and did she need to be somewhere else? She was the "screener" to be sure I would be a great fit. I understand that and what I don't understand is.......why are you rushing if you job is to qualify me as an excellent candidate to work along side you?? In the end she did let me know I would be a candidate. Haleluyah! All my prep work to get ready this morning, pick a business acceptable and striking outfit, get myself downtown and fill out all that paperwork at the very least wasn't in vain. So I will wait for the next phone call for my 3rd interview with this prospective employer and certainly I do hope I will be the one chosen. There is not much else I can do except brush up on my P&L knowledge from my past employment.

I had a major computer issue 4 days ago.......couldn't send out e-mails. Contacted Comcast online in the IT Chat and was told there are no problems and I must be having problems with my software or router. 4 days later when I still couldn't send out any e-mails I again contacted Comcast IT Chat and this time I got someone who actually knew what he was talking about! He instructed me to change my settings since there was major spam going out (most likely from the PC we had plugged into the router for wifi. against my e-mail account. Someone was sending out a huge amount of spam! That computer has since been unplugged and being shipped back to the person who had supplied it to me for my work intranet. It only proves to me that Apple computers are the way to go. Apples do not get spam even if connected to some other connection. No spam, no viruses, nada. I'm not an IT person and if someone is reading this and it as great IT person great for you! I am not and am self taught. Amazing how much we depend on e-mail these days. I'm glad to have gmail also and that is what I used to send out my e-mails for 4 days until the problem was resolved. In the end my problem was solved thanks to the IT person whose name I forgot! I so hate spending time on having to resolve computer problems that I didn't cause in the first place! In the end....when you watch those PC vs. Mac TV Commercials remember......they may make it out to get a chuckle and actually it is all true!

Stretching the GREEN movement

Recently major TV Channels have been stressing their comitment to GREEN. I am totally for GREEN to improve our environment,, health and well being. These TV stations are taking the concept over the top!

Hearst Tower in NYC is the first GREEN building in NYC. I have been there each time I visit my kids in NYC as my daughter works for Hearst Magazines. We enjoy their delicious Cafe foods for lunch. (all organic- grown/baked/cooked). The price for lunch is extremely low as publishing companies are notorious for under paying their highly talented employees and honestly this is the very least they can offer to their employees who are struggling to pay their rent, etc. Hearst recycles rain water on the rooftop and redistributes it throughout NYC. This is a green commitment and directly related to our environment. I cannot explain all the engineering techniques applied directly to all of their Green processes and I'll leave that up to the engineers to explain. Not so sure what those Green commercials by major networks are truly saying or what they are directly doing to improve our environment and our lives.

Virgin America - the Best Airline!

Having just flown Virgin America Airlines SFO/LAX/SFO I felt it necessary to comment on their spectacular service including updates to your e-mail, cell phone, e-mail, etc. Their brand new airbus planes feel as if you are living in the 21st Century (which we are!). The seats are black leather with plenty of legroom. In the seat in front of you is a screen from which you can watch movies, TV shows, read a book, listen to music (including Medeski Martin and Wood) make a phone call and order food. You are supplied with either a headset or ear phones that work quite well. You pay for your food (phone calls, movies, books or shopping) by simply swiping your credit card. No exhange of money. No need for the flight attendant to go searching for change for your $20 bill. Finally I can say Virgin America has brought flight to the 21st century. I certainly should have booked my flight to JFK coming up on this airline. Since I've already booked it it is now too late. Next time for sure! All the other airlines seem quite ancient and dated next to Virgin America. Kudos to them! P.S. I do not work for them nor was I paid to write my comments. Try them out for yourself next time you fly. You'll be quite impressed!

Medinski Martin Wood and Scoffield at the Fillmore

I went to see Medinski, Martin, Wood and Scoffield with my son and boyfriend at the Fillmore last weekend. Actually I thought they were better without Scoffield! He is extremely talented but I felt it took away from the groups original unique original sounds. It was a great show and the Fillmore was a great place to go see them or any group! LOVE all the posters from their venues over all the years! I am way more familiar with the Fillmore East where I did see all the 60's and 70's greats!

With all the focus on...Bridges....

With all the focus on the bridge collapse in Minneapolis it stirs up the "fear factor" when driving over major bridges. The Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge are the bridges I mostly travel over. The Bay Bridge has been in the process of being worked on for at least the past 9 years - ever since the major earthquake here in '99? I can't help thinking when driving over the Bay Bridge that this bridge will collapse as it did then. The Minneapolis bridge collapse was in fact horrible and those least suspecting commuters, some of which lost their lives, were at the mercy of faulty construction that made it's way through inspections and some cover ups

, etc. On the Bay Bridge there are always jack hammers going and lanes blocked off. This weekend the bridge will be closed completely for construction. Hopefully full attention is going on to all the details and supreme materials are being used to make this bridge almost indestructible. Let's hope so!
